1. Exhibition of Chinese Torture Torture Implements to Tour U.S.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Kelsang Aukatsang, International Campaign for Tibet <ict@igc.apc.org>
WASHINGTON, May 5, ICT --
ICT is coordinating a national tour of torture implements
smuggled out of Tibet by Palden Gyatso, a 62 year old monk
and former prisoner of conscience.
Palden Gyatso survived 24 years of imprisonment before be
was finally released in October of 1992. His crime was
compiling news and writing pamphlets that criticized
Chinese policies in Tibet.
"What they do is tie you up and suspend you from the
ceiling, like a light bulb. Then they beat you. Your
hands are tied behind your back and when they hit the rope
with a stick, your nerves receive a shock, causing
uncontrollable urination and excretion. I had no freedom
to die. That's how I suffered." says Palden in the PBS
film, Red Flag Over Tibet, which was aired earlier on
February 22.
Shortly before Palden was released, he was able to bribe
prison guards into selling him some torture instruments.
The instruments were paid for by his friends who also
realized the importance of showing the instruments to the
outside world. Palden made the arduous trip through the
Himalayas with 20 kilograms of torture instruments on his
back.
Absence of proper travel documents has unfortunately made
it impossible for Palden to come to America for the time
being. However, a Dutch woman, Francesca van Holthoon,
who has worked closely with Palden is coming to Washington
with the torture implements on the 6th of May. Francesca
will be accompanying the implements during the tour. Her
relationship with Palden and close knowledge of the
implements should be of invaluable help to all those
hosting events.
Tibet Support Groups in 11 major U.S. cities will be
organizing press conferences, talks, informal gatherings,
fund raisers, etc., featuring the torture implements.
Amnesty International is hosting a press conference in
Washington on May 13 featuring the torture implements.
Richard Gere, who spent time with Palden Gyatso in
Dharmsala, will also speak at the press conference.
ICT is coordinating the tour and providing the groups
with: sample press release, literature, photographs and
hopefully a video film, materials from Amnesty
International and back-up support.

1) Dalai Lama regrets violence involving Tibetans in Dharamsala
---------------------------------------------------------------------
PTI news agency, New Delhi, In English 1632 gmt 3 May 1994 BBC SWB
5 may 1993
New Delhi, 3rd May: The Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama ,
Tuesday [3rd May] said "stray incidents", like the recent one
involving local residents in Dharamsala, in the northern Indian
state of Himachal Pradesh and Tibetans settled there would not be
allowed to disrupt "the harmonious relationship" shared by Indians
and Tibetans for the last three decades. Expressing sorrow at the
"unfortunate" incident, the Dalai Lama, in a statement issued at
Dharrnsala, said "the government of India, fully aware of our
situation, granted asylum to Tibetan refugees and we are gratefil
to the people and Indian government for their kindness and
understanding". He said: Immediately on my return I offer my
condolences to the bereaved family of the young local resident who
succumbed to injuries after an altercation with a Tibetan boy in
Dharmsalan. The incident was "most unfortunaten, he said, and
added "I was deeply pained to learn it". "I am also very saddened
to find widespread damage to Tibetan property caused by an unruly
mob," he said, adding, however, I am extremely encouraged and
proud of the fact that Tibetans acted with great restraint." The
Dalai Lama said, "This has no doubt contributed to the speedy
defusion of the tension." The Tibetan spiritual leader said he
would discuss the "issues and grievances that have been raised by
individuals in the recent developments" with his officials. "We
shall take immediate action on those issues directly relating to
Tibetans," he noted.

A FULL PAGE ADVERTISEMENT IN THE TIMES, LONDON
6 MAY 1994
For some reason unknown to us, there has been an enormous
amount of speculation in Europe lately concerning the state of
our marriage. This all stems from a-very crude, ignorant and
libellous "article" in a French tabloid. We both feel quite
foolish responding to such nonsense, but since it seems to
have reached some sort of critical mass, here's our statement
to correct the falsehoods and rumours and hope it will
alleviate the;concerns of our friends and fans.
We got married because we love each other and we decided to
make a life together. We are heterosexual and monogamous and
take our commitment to each other very seriously. There is not
and never .has been a pre-nuptial agreement of any kind.
Reports of a divorce, are totally false. There are no plans,
nor have there ever been any plans for divorce. We remain very
married. We both look forward to having a family. Richard is
not abandoning his career. He is starting a film in July with
others planned to follow.
We will continue to support "difficult" causes such as AIDS
research and treatment, Tibetan independence, cultural and
tribal survival, international Human Rights, Gay and Lesbian
Rights, ecology, leukaemia research and treatment,,democracy
movements, disarmament, non-violence and anything else we wish
to support irrespective of what the tabloids try to imbly.
Now, that said, we do feel we have a basic right to privacy
and deserve to have that respected like everyone else.
Marriage is hard enough without all this negative speculation.
Thoughts and words are very powerful, so please be
responsible, truthful and kind.
